Farm to Chef: Making Connections

This Morning Chef Dave Hunt and Adirondack Harvest teamed up and organized a meeting between local farmers and our area chefs. Generations Restaurant was filled with an eclectic group of  farmers and chefs looking to build connections with each other. Chef Hunt is a leader in the farm to fork movement in the Adirondacks. He purchases as much as he can from local vendors and farmers. The Adirondacks hasn’t historically been known for it’s farming, as the harsh weather, short growing season, and rough terrain, can make it difficult for a farm to remain profitable. There are still many farms in the area, though, and at Generations we are proud to support them.

Generations put out a delicious Breakfast Spread, made mostly of locally produced food

There is increasing interest in buying locally here in the Adirondacks and Chef Hunt and Generations Restaurant are trying to make these number increase even more by getting more restaurants involved in purchasing locally produced goods. At today’s meeting Chef Hunt shared his business plan that has worked for him the last couple years. He has increased the amount of locally produced food he purchases year to year and it is helping expand his business, people are willing to pay more for the freshest, best quality meat and produce.

Great turn out at the Farm to Chef Meeting this Morning at Generations

Representatives from over 20 different restaurants, farms, and local food vendors attended the meeting. There was a lot of interesting information shared and many connections made between chefs and farmers. Chef Dave and Generations are very committed to serving the freshest, best quality food to their guests and they are encouraging other local restaurants to do the same.  Chef Dave said there is a huge difference, for example, in the taste of lettuce that was just harvested the day before it is delivered to him and lettuce that was delivered in a bag from a mass distributor.

At this point it is impossible to purchase everything you need to run a restaurant locally in the Adirondacks, but meetings like this are a huge step in helping to grow local agriculture. Chefs are sharing with farmers what they want or need, therefore helping the  local economy and cutting down waste. Generations is proud to serve locally produced products and will continue to add and grow their menu using these items.

Chef Hunt brought out his Tibetan Salt Block to serve and prepare a sampling of Edgley Farm Bison!

This Sunday, February 3rd is Super Football Sunday, presented by Bud Light, at Whiteface. Spend the whole day skiing and then move upstairs to the newly renovated Cloudspin Longe to watch the San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens face off in Super Bowl XLVII, where there will be Jagermeister, Bud Light and Michelob Ultra drink specials. The Golden Arrow offers their lowest ski package available for this special Super Football Sunday, if you stay with this package it is just $69 per person for the night of February 3rd and that includes your room rate and your ski pass to Whiteface! (That is based on double/triple occupancy, it is $109 for a solo skier).

Photo: Unbelievable view from Whiteface today. Whiteface has the greatest vertical drop in the East. Readers of SnowEast Magazine voted Whiteface Lake Placid their favorite Destination Village in the East. It  was also their readers Favorite Ski Resort and the East’s Most Scenic Resort.

Recently it was voted by as one of the 10 hippest ski areas. Yes, it is now “hip”, as  in cool (and we’re not talking about temperature), to ski at Whiteface! “This three-peak mountain feels more Western than any other regional resort, especially when venturing into the Slides, as outstanding off piste region that starts well above Vermont’s tallest mountains and is open at the discretion of the ski patrol.”  Very high compliments for Whiteface.

So get your February started out right, take a trip to Whiteface and stay at the Golden Arrow for this Super Sunday, you will NOT be disappointed.

Mirror Lake Madness

Mirror Lake was rich with activity these past two wintry weekends. The ice is positively frozen and you know what that means, Dogsled rides are back in full force. AJ Arnold is out on Mirror Lake every Thursday through Sunday with his troop of husky’s ready to take you on a ride! He learned the craft of dog sledding from his father and is now carrying on the tradition. When you’re driving by the Golden Arrow be sure to look for his Green Dog Sled ride sign out front near out sign, sometimes he even gives rides on weekdays, so look for that sign! Here is a cool video about AJ and his team of dogs…those dogs are amazing!

Warm up under blankets and go for the ride of your life!

Over the past couple weeks there have been teams out on the ice preparing it for hockey tournaments and skating.

The first Pond Hockey Tournament that the Golden Arrow and Mirror Lake hosted was the Northwood Alumni Tournament. There was a very big turn out, and a great way to kick off the pond hockey season!

Last weekend was the CAN/AM Pond Hockey Tournament, and it was even bigger! Hockey Players are tough because temperatures were in the high negatives this past weekend.

What an amazing backdrop to play hockey against!

Mirror Lake will continue to be a filled with people throughout the winter. The Toboggan shoot will be open soon, visit this website for updates on it’s status. Also you can always bring your skates and skate on Mirror Lake at your own leisure. If you don’t have your own skates you can rent them at the Lake Placid Skate Shop. There website is here, and their phone number is 518-302-5028.

If you love lounging around Mirror Lake in the summertime, you should really try it out in the wintertime!

Ringing in the New Year with Renovations and Resolutions

Extreme Makeover: Resort Edition is in full force at the Golden Arrow! January is already speeding by and as many of you are trying to uphold your New Years resolutions, we at the Golden Arrow are trying to do the same. 2013 will be a year full of revamping for us; we always put customer satisfaction at the front of everything we try to achieve, and  during 2013 we will take it to the next level. Our New Years Resolution is to give the people what they want!

Peter and his team are constantly updating and making the resort better, and this year we have a few special projects. Peter’s daughter Andrea has joined the GALR team as head of beautification. She is helping make sure that everything is updated and beautiful. We are getting a lot of new furniture and other items to enhance the beauty of the resort. Andrea’s husband, Brandon, is also helping us update the resort. He is our new technical guru and helping us to update things behind the scenes so that our team can be more productive and therefore useful to our guests.

Here are some of the projects we started in the Fall of 2012 and are continuing throughout 2013:

Beach Expansion: We often get comment cards here at the GALR about how our guests wished our beach was bigger.

Well we listened and we stated to break ground on the expanded beach this Fall and will complete it in the spring.

New Mattresses: We bought over 50 new mattresses for our guest rooms this fall, sleep well at the GALR knowing you are on a new mattress.

We made two sets a beautiful stone stairs leading  down to the beach.

We’re also updating all of the bedding in the Deluxe Lake Front and Deluxe Village side Rooms. We’re also adding more pillows to the beds (not pictured)

That pictures shown above are just SOME of the renovations and updates happening at the GALR. We also just got new Keurig Coffee Makers for each room. The Suites and Specialty Rooms are getting larger flat screen TVs and the old ones will move to the Deluxe Rooms. We are also working on getting faster wireless internet as well as a nicer business center for guests to use, among much more. With the help of Andrea, her husband Brandon, and the whole staff of the Golden Arrow we will have a wonderful year.  We are most looking forward to seeing you, our guest, enjoying all of the hard work!

Ah! That Autumn feeling is in the Air!!

Mother nature has took a drastic turn in Air temps as of late.  This must mean the Autumn season is slowly being bestowed upon us which most definetely means cooler temperatures in the evening are adimant.  Another sign of fall is the children have gone back to school (now not too many cheers parents!! hehe…as I let out a huge YIPPEE!!).  Of course the vibrant colors of fall are  very slowly changing in the Adirondacks and Lake Placid.  Do not worry is still a little early to see all the great colors but it will be here before you know it.  Just look at this photo of the foliage from previous years! It is amazing!!!!

RICH YOUR TOURGUIDE is back  from running all over this great Lake Placid area.  Boy!  You never realise actually how big Lake Placid and the surronding areas are until you head out on your bike or just on your own two feet that god gave you.  Had a great week and sorry have not been on for a bit but business and duty calls.  I am back and wanted to give all of you great tourists some info about some outstanding view points for the upcoming Fall Foliage that is approaching. Yes, believe it or not there are some colors changing already (little early but still going to be peak towards the end of Sept. Please do not hold me to that…I am fragile…lol).

Anyway, a great place to visit to get a great vantage point on a nice clear day is none other than the WHITEFACE VETERANS MEMORIAL HIGHWAY. This eight mile climb highway ascends to the fifth highest mountain in the Adirondacks. A great stone castle at the summit gives you spectacular views across the Adirondack Region and perfect for all of you “Leaf Peepers”. There is a fee for this highway and the hours of operation are limited daily from 9am-4pm. So, make sure to plan your day to visit this breath-taking view.

Heights not your friend or maybe your foe…hehe. Then there is the ADIRONDACK SCENIC RAILWAY which runs from Lake Placid to Saranac Lake and back. This ride takes you through the wooded section of the Adirondacks and during the peak foliage gives great views of the colors. This is a 20 mile train ride that you will definetely enjoy. Who knows there might even be some entertainment while you are on board? Take the time while you are in Saranac Lake to walk through there quaint village.

There are many other places to visit for the foliage, including out your very own guest room at the Golden Arrow!  But if I give them all away, then that would leave no adventure for you to explore the Lake Placid area (just kidding).  Stop by the Golden Arrow and ask any of the informative and friendly staff, tell them Richard your Tour Guide sent yah!
There is great hiking trails with beautiful vantage points.  Do not forget two major events in October: OKTOBERFEST and FLAMING LEAVES FESTIVAL.  I will be back in a bit to give you more information about these exciting events in the near future.  Time to catch up on some much needed work. Have a great Autumn season and please do not hurt your eyes from staring at the wonderful colors in the next few weeks!!
