Ice Castles, Frying Pans & a Festive Parade

Hey everyone, RICH YOUR LOCAL NEWSCASTER coming to you from Saranac Lake where the 115th Saranac Lake Winter Carnival is about to begin. This is a festival of many sporting events, great food, live entertainment and a great parade and fireworks display. This is taking place from now Feb. 3rd until Sunday Feb.12th, 2008. It is time to enjoy and celebrate this great Adirondack area and the winter season at the longest running event of its kind in the Eastern US. This year Aliens! (YES ALIENS!! RUN FOR YOUR LIFE) have invaded Saranac lake and is the theme that this year’s Winter Carnival is set around. Spaceships, weird creatures and aliens of all sorts will be walking and entertaining for this year’s festivities. One of the events which is a must see is the event called the Fry Pan toss, where you see the ladies throwing their cast iron pans. (OUCH! hope one does not hit me in the head from a miss-aim or who knows you may see an alien beaming down to toss a fry pan..now that is exciting).

One of the great highlights of this carnival which can be seen by driving down RT 86 in Saranac Lake is the Lighted Ice Palace. This is constructed out of the lake ice and has a maze for the children and is quite the spectacular lighted sight. I also spotted an Alien Ice Sculpture as I was driving by so the Aliens have landed in Saranac Lake (makes me all warm inside or cold if you are standing near the Ice Castle BRRRR!!). Please do not miss the spectacular fireworks show on Saturday February 4th when the Castle is lit and the following week Saturday Feb. 11th there is the great parade for adults and children alike that you will certainly not want to miss. So, many events packed into one week that you will not want to miss.

Pond Hockey at the Golden Arrow

Are you sitting right now watching your favorite hockey team skating back and forth on the ice and scoring those hat tricks? Thinking to yourself, “Hmm, wouldn’t it be great to hop in my hockey skates and get a small team together to test your skills in this great sport. ” Hop into your car and head to Lake Placid area where those dreams could be come a reality. RICH YOUR SPORTSCASTER outside the back door of the Golden Arrow on Mirror Lake just about to lace up my skates to head out on the ice!!! (wish me luck, that I dont fall on my tailbone again..ouch or worse crash into one of my fellow skaters) Watching the great staff of ORDA cleaning up the ice and making minature rinks for the upcoming Pond Hockey tournament this weekend.

Ahh!! I remember the memories of my childhood. There was something very special about playing hockey on the frozen pond. Heading down to the Pond with your skates over your shoulder. You and hockey buddies pushing the newly fallen snow off the Pond, setting the boots as goal posts, and hearing the imaginary roar of the crowd as you score the first goal! It just doesn’t get any better than this! The CAN/AM HOCKEY ASSOCIATION has done just that!!! You can re-enact this scene in Lake Placid, NY on January 26-29, 2012. The script is perfect…Pond Hockey with a team of close friends, the setting is spectacular with Whiteface Mountain overlooking Mirror Lake, the competition spirited and intense, and add into the mix the atmosphere of the Olympic site and the 1980 Gold Medal Victory. A Unique happening is about to take place. Be there to experience what hockey is all about.

Golden Arrow is very excited and happy to have all of our Pond Hockiers back for this upcoming weekend to enjoy another great year of Pond Hockey on Mirror Lake. (One suggestion, bring your heavy clothes and bundle up..dont want you frozen to that ice..hehe and please do not stick your tongue to it..not a pleasant experience either). We look forward to watching everyone strive for the gold medal in the division. OH!!!! Do not want to leave the youngsters out!! Sorry guys. There is also a Children’s hockey tournament going on across the street at the OLYMPIC ARENA. CANADIAN HOCKEY ENTERPRISE is hosting one of many youth hockey tournaments at the same time this weekend. If you get too cold from watching the guys out on the ice on Mirror Lake and want to watch more hockey, then head across the road to the Olympic Center and watch the youngsters strive for the Gold. Whew!!! Now I am all stoked to get out on this ice. Wish me luck and Good luck to all the participants this weekend in your tournaments!!! Goals for everyone!!! Cold Temps & Snow is Here!

I know we all have been waiting for Mother Nature to throw down the gauntlet of snow in all the Eastern coast. Do not fret anymore!! As, of the past few weeks we have received inches of snow here and inches of snow there. With all the cold temperatures everything has frozen over nicely and Lake Placid has all the winter activites to enjoy. We have had myriads of people over the last few weeks tell us how wonderful the area is and the great winter events that their family has enjoyed. With that said, RICH YOUR NEWSCASTER & MS. DEAL-MAKER would like to throw some ideas your way to book your winter break and vacation.

As, I ride up on WHITEFACE MOUNTAINS CLOUDSPLITTER GONDOLA anticipating that first trip down its great slopes, I want to catch you all up to date on the current snow conditions. Whiteface is reporting at this time 65% of the slopes open at the mountain which is a great 55 of 85 trails open. Primary surface conditions are loose granular and they have had at least 9 new inches of snow over the past 7 days. This makes for a great day of skiing for any snow bunny or hotdogger out there who wants to loosen up those ski legs. The extended forecast looks good with possible snow showers once again on Monday and Tuesday. Time for me to get off this phone and typing, almost at the summit. Wish me luck and hopefully I dont look like a giant snowball rolling down the slope and stay on the skis this time..hehe…that does not feel good!! Hip! Hip! Hooray! 2012 is Finally Here!!

Wow!! A new year is upon us and I hope everyone did not celebrate too much!! It was a very great year with all kinds of exciting events around the world and in our very own backyard in Lake Placid. RICH YOUR NEWSCASTER hopes that everyone had a great time at the resort in 2011 and rang the New Year in safely (I for once was a good boy and stayed home with family..yes always a first..hehe).

On behalf of the Golden Arrow, I want to take this time to thank all of the patrons who have frequented our doors of the resort this year. We enjoyed each and everyone of our guests and look forward to another great year. You have helped us with many “Green” ideas for our Eco-Friendly Resort and have taken them all into consideration. Our very own CINDY THE E.F.Q. has been busy organizing and implementing these ideas. The most exciting green event of the year was that we installed our solar paneling on one of our roofs of the resort which helps with heating aspects of our water in the resort. It is a great new addition that we are happy to do our part in helping protect this wonderful earth of ours. We also had a great vendor this year set up this past Spring in the parking lot of the Golden Arrow showing individuals the making of Maple Sugar and Syrup. It was a nice touch and boy was the syrup and food items delicious!! Our very own GENERATIONS RESTAURANT implemented a great menu that showcased some of this syrup and according to the feedback all the patrons LOOOVVVED it. These were a few of the many highlights this past year.

Now that 2010 has begun, please check out all the great NEW PACKAGES that MS. DEAL-MAKER has been busily working on. Just from looking at these deals they are definetely not to be missed. (If you see her floating around the resort please give her a good ole Howdy!)

Some Snow! Plenty of Activities Abound!

The snow is here, more is coming, and just about everything is open! Whiteface Mountain and Weather.com is forecasting snow for Christmas day, 12/27, 12/28, and that’s just as far as we can see at this point! Please Please Do not forget!! On December 30th, 2011 at 7:30pm at the Herb Brooks Arena those famous Ice Skaters are back with STARS ON ICE for their 2012 Tour. Plenty of great seats still available to watch this spectacular ice extravaganza. Olympic Silver Medalist Sasha Cohen, Kurt Browning and US National Gold Champion Todd Eldredge will be performing and amazing all the spectators, as well, as many more. It is a night of skating that you and your family will defintely enjoy.

Needless to say, folks, there is plenty to do! Mountaineering is still an option, of course, and can be done with or without a guide. We have plenty of active people here at the Hotel that are happy to give you suggestions on your level of knowledge and ability. And, the best part, I haven’t even mentioned yet the amenities available to you here at the Hotel, such as:

Gearing up for Winter Activities

Has anyone looked out their window lately?? Here in Lake Placid we have been seeing that joyous thing we call snow. The sky is looking beautiful from all the wonderful flakes falling upon the area. Just this morning I heard several small children saying “Look mommy and daddy” SNOW SNOW!!! YAY!!! Such a wonderful feeling to hear those happy cheers of joy. This could not be happening at a better time for the Ski Season at WHITEFACE MOUNTAIN and the great event coming just around the corner. RICH YOUR NEWSCASTER relaxing my weary bones in the Golden Arrow’s great jaccuzzi tub in the indoor pool area after a great day of skiing at the mountain. So, let me give you the skinny on what the conditions are like at the mountain and hit on a few deals that our very own gal of deals would love for me to mention.

Currently at Whiteface Mountain, they have 3 major trails open on the mountain and expecting more to be opened in the next day or so. Snow has been in the past 6 hours falling steadily on the slopes making snow making and fresh powder to hit the slopes. These few trails are defintely worth your time as they are some of the best the mountain has to offer. To enjoy these conditions I would like to hit on our EARLY SEASON MIDWEEK & WEEKEND SKI PACKAGE offered at the Golden Arrow. If you would like to ski Sunday through Thursday, you can partake in the Midweek Early Season package that is available at $79 per person, per night and based on double occupancy. However, if you are planning on visiting the next few weeks over the weekend, then the price for Friday and Saturday is a low price of $109 per person, per night. Both these packages included an evening in a Deluxe Guest room and lift ticket to Whiteface Mountain. This package is available until December 15th, 2011. Perfect time to get on the phone and speak to our wonderful reservations staff who are awaiting your call.

Another event that is around the corner on the weekend of December 9th is the HOLIDAY VILLAGE STROLL!! Time to get into some early Christmas festivities before the “Big Red man” comes down the chimney. (I know parents he gets all the credit..but look at the joy on the childrens faces) This event is a weekend full of fun and activites for all ages. Lake Placid is rolling out the red carpet sponsoring great family events on this particular weekend such as kids crafts, Holiday Movies, a Skating Party, a showing of the Nutcracker & of course amazing holiday shopping at the many boutiques! The pinnacle event will be held on Saturday with the arrival of Santa on Main Street by Firetruck & the Tree Lighting! Oh! I want to mention we still have our Holiday Stroll Package still available for $179 per person and is sure to put a smile on your face.

As I am looking at my fingers, I think it is time to say farewell, as my time in this hottub is up. They are quite wrinkled and my muscles feel very relax. Giving Thanks this Week!!

In case, everyone is not aware yet, THANKSGIVING is just around the horizon. That means spending quality time with the family and lets not forget Black Friday where the hustle and bustle of Holiday shopping is maddening in the stores (yes I am finishing work grabbing my mom and headed to the stores that late at night..no rest for during the holidays). RICH YOUR NEWCASTER would like you to hop in your car and head to Lake Placid this Thankgiving weekend as there is always great shopping at all the boutiques, especially the store fronts just off the hotel in the ALPINE MALL!! We are missing our friends Stars on Ice this Thanksgiving weekend but keep your eyes peeled as they are coming during the Christmas Season. No frets as we have some great CAN/AM YOUTH HOCKEY taking place this Friday and Saturday at the Olympic Center.

Youth and their parents will be ascending on Lake Placid with their various teams to compete in these great hockey tournaments. Everyone’s bellies will be full from the great feast at Thanksgiving and ready to burn that energy up on the ice. These tourneys have been going on for decades and they give everyone who has never been to Lake Placid a chance to experience the fun and excitement of playing in an actual Olympic Complex. Also, the children get to meet some of their hockey heros from time to time and see the site of where the MIRACLE ON ICE took place in 1980. Zachary and Little Fiona definetely recommends these tournaments thez iz the best! Yes, little ones, they are very entertaining and full of cheers and goals.

OH! Before I forget please stop by to our very own GENERATIONS restaurant where Madame Cuisine and Chef Dave Hunt is whipping up a great culinary Thanksgiving feast for this all auspitious day. (Boy, I cannot wait to indulge in all the great eats. I cannot wait to sink my teeth into the mouthwatering lamb. Will have to loosen up the belt a little…heh). As, you can see great eats and a fabulous show to see this coming Thanksgiving. Get on that phone or hop in that car and drive to the Adirondacks to Lake Placid!! Holiday Stroll is on its way!!

It is the most wonderful time of the year! Thinking about the Holidays yet?? Christmas is right around the corner. To infuse the holiday spirit into everyone, the village of Lake Placid is sponsoring the 4TH ANNUAL HOLIDAY VILLAGE STROLL taking place December 9th through the 11th, 2011!! What better way to get your family into the holiday mood than to take them to a WINTER WONDERLAND. We are also in the giving mood this season and MS. DEAL MAKER would like to offer our Holiday Stroll Package.

What is a Holiday Stroll? Well, my dears let me tell you. Lake Placid is rolling out the red carpet sponsoring great family events on this particular weekend such as kids crafts, Holiday Movies, a Skating Party, a showing of the Nutcracker & of course amazing holiday shopping at the many boutiques! The pinnacle event will be held on Saturday with the arrival of Santa on Main Street by Firetruck & the Tree Lighting!
