February has finally arrived all around the world. Winter is in full force in Lake Placid and Whiteface Mountain. On February 2nd the famous groundhog Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow and that means six more weeks of winter. Great news for all of you avid skiiers and winter adventure seekers out there. (I know I know..more cold..but hey that is why we love the Adirondacks..hehe) I know some of the local groundhogs did not see their shadow but, HEY Phil is never wrong!

RICHARD YOUR NEWSCASTER is back in session after a little break and ready to fill you in on a new ski package for non-downhill skiiers. Lets not forget the exciting Winter Carnival that is held in Saranac Lake every year!!! That is right! The 113th ANNUAL SARANAC LAKE WINTER CARNIVAL is also kicking off its festivites starting on Friday February 5th and running through Sunday February 14th. This year’s theme is ADIRONDACK COWBOYS and sure will be a treat for every member of your family. You must head to Saranac Lake and see the glorious Ice Castle that will be lit up this coming weekend. It is truly a sight to see!!! (Of course do not stick your tongue to the ice, from experience it is not a comfortable situation…lol).

On the following weekend on Saturday February 13th there is the glorious parade in the afternoon. The children will enjoy seeing Sara the Snowy Owl and all of her woodland friends parading the streets (yes, I like to hug the mascots too..lol). Located at the OLYMPIC SPEEDSKATING OVAL you can enjoy a 2 hour session of carving the ice around the oval while listening to some relaxing music. It is a great time to spend with your family and they will thank you for it.

Last but certainly not least, seeing that this is an Olympic Year and they are just around the corner. You should visit the OLYMPIC MUSEUM where all kinds of memorabilia from the 1980 Winter Olympics is displayed. Maybe, enjoy your first Bobsled ride, where you can feel the experience that our Olympic hopefuls train for year after year. You should add this to your to do list while in Lake Placid.

Well, it has been a few weeks delayed, but finally Whiteface Mountain is officially open with a few trails. So, tune up those skis as RICH YOUR NEWS AND SPORTSCASTER is doing as I am typing (yes he is multi-talented..hehe and likes to speak in 3rd person) and get ready to visit Lake Placid and Whiteface Mountain for some great skiing. They are opening their gates as of Saturday December 4th, 2009 and here is the update of the trails that will be open.

Whiteface opens tomorrow at 10am with skiing from Excelsior, Summit Express to Upper Valley with downloading via the little whiteface double to the Cloudsplitter Gondola. Expect variable conditions with barespots, possible walking at the end of the upper valley trail to the lift. No beginner terrain is available, intermediate or above skiers and riders only please. Lift ticket prices will be $38 for adults, teens and seniors and just $25 for juniors. So, as you can see still in the beginning processes but Whiteface is making snow everyday and night and more trails will open day by day as long as Mother Nature cooperates. If skiing is not your thing, then do not forget about a very important event taking place next weekend. On December 11th through the 13th Lake Placid village is opening up their streets and shops for the 2ND ANNUAL HOLIDAY VILLAGE STROLL. All kinds of great activites to get you in the festive mood: Santa Claus will be visiting, The Nutcracker at the Lake Placid Center of the Arts, Breakfast with Santa at participating resorts and restaurants and plenty of Holiday Shopping! (Gosh, I still have not finished, great time to get in on the bargains). So, as you can see just because the ground is not completely covered with snow as of yet, there is still plenty to enjoy in downtown Lake Placid.
